God’s Word: The Unshakable Foundation

In today’s world, people build their lives on many different foundations—relationships, careers, education, status, and even addictions. Yet, only one foundation remains stable and unchanging: the Bible, God’s Word.

One of the greatest threats we face today, even within the church, is biblical illiteracy. Many people base their theology on Instagram posts or YouTube preachers they’ve never met, assuming that the most convincing speaker must be telling the truth. But instead of studying what God’s Word actually says, they allow culture to dictate their beliefs. Even within churches, we see versions of the Bible being manipulated to serve personal agendas, compromising the truth of God’s Word. This is something we cannot stand by and allow to happen.

Consider the Leaning Tower of Pisa—a structure whose foundational flaws were ignored for years until engineers worked to correct it. If we do not recognize and address the cracks in our foundation, our faith and churches may suffer the same fate. Small cracks may seem insignificant, but if left unchecked, they can lead to collapse. That is why we, as a church, declare that God’s Word is our foundation.

The Authority and Power of God’s Word

Frank Damazio once said, “Whenever the church does not maintain the Word of God as its only final standard, she finds herself compromising God's truth in many areas.” The Word of God is the unshakable foundation upon which this church is built. When compared to every other religious text, the Bible passes every archaeological, geographical, historical, systematic, scientific, prophetic, and miraculous test. It is the living Word of God and His love letter to us.

Rice Brooks & Steve Murrell put it this way: “The Bible is more than an instruction manual or a rule book. It is more than a random collection of stories, poems, and letters. It is the voice of God communicating with us.”

The Bible’s consistency over time is miraculous. It is comprised of 66 books, written by 40 authors over 1,600 years, in three different languages, on three continents, all pointing to the same truth: Jesus Christ. Imagine someone writing a book today, another person in Brazil writing another 1,200 years from now, and someone in China writing another 1,000 years later—all without ever meeting or comparing notes—and all of them aligning perfectly. That is the Bible!

Wrestling With God’s Word in Difficult Seasons

While we proclaim the power of God’s Word, we must also acknowledge that sometimes our experiences don’t align with our expectations of it. Many have believed for healing, prayed for miracles, and yet faced disappointment. I, too, have wrestled with God through my own hardships, including the pain of three miscarriages in 18 months. My experience didn’t seem to match the God of provision and protection described in Scripture. Yet, in those moments, I discovered another facet of God—His comfort.

God’s Word is deeper than our cognitive capacity to comprehend. It is an invitation to seek Him beyond our emotions. If you have been hurt by misrepresentations of Scripture, I apologize on behalf of those who have not reflected Christ well. That is why we must make God’s Word our standard, not culture, not personal experiences, and certainly not human opinions.

The Importance of a Strong Foundation

Consider the skyscrapers in New York City. We admire their height and grandeur, yet rarely think about their foundation. The reality is, the taller the building, the deeper the foundation must be. The same principle applies to our lives. Many today focus on building a platform, gaining followers, and increasing their influence, yet neglect their character and values.

In our church, we will always prioritize character over charisma. Gifting is important, but it is not a foundation. The unchanging Word of God must be the bedrock of our lives.

Jesus’ Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders

Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV): “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

The storm will come. It is not a matter of if, but when. The strength of our foundation will determine whether we stand or fall. That is why this church is built upon the Word of God.

1 Corinthians 3:11 (NKJV): “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

John 1:1-2, 14 (AMP): “In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.”

How Do We Make God’s Word Our Foundation?

  1. Study It

    • A study showed that those who read the Bible at least four times a week experience:

      • 228% increase in sharing their faith

      • 407% increase in Scripture memorization

      • 59% decrease in pornography addiction

      • 30% decrease in loneliness and depression

Joshua 1:9: “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”

Bill Johnson said, “The Bible is the only book in the entire known world where when you read it, the author of the book shows up.” The Holy Spirit quickens His presence when we engage with His Word.

  2. Make It Our Standard

James 1:25 (NLT): “But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.”

Matthew 4:4 (NIV): “Jesus answered, ‘It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Final Thought: Are You Ready for the Test?

A pastor once volunteered at a construction site. He was given the task of cutting 100 boards to 8 feet. He measured the first board correctly but used each subsequent board as the guide for the next cut. By the end, the boards were all 1/8 inch too long. A small deviation at the beginning resulted in significant inaccuracy over time.

Likewise, if we do not use God’s Word as our measuring stick, we will drift off course. We live in a culture of misinformation. Don’t just take my word for it—test everything against God’s Word.

One day, we will stand before God. The Bible is our textbook for the final test. The good news? It’s an open-book exam. Will you be ready?

Let’s build our lives on the unchanging, unshakable, and eternal foundation of God’s Word.
